Here’s what happened: A convoy of Marines trolling insurgent-riddled Haditha was hit by a huge IED. A Humvee was destroyed. One Marine was killed (split in two). Two other Marines were wounded (one grievously). There was a lot of shooting at an approaching Iraqi car. There was a lot of shooting at two nearby Iraqi houses, where Marines heard, as the New York Times put it, ”the distinct metallic sound of an AK-47 being prepared to fire.” As one Marine witness explained, ”the squad leader thought he was about to kick in the door and walk into a machine gun.” In the end, no additional Marines had died, but 24 Iraqi civilians, including some children, had been killed.
And here lies a hunk of the politically correct outrage fueling prosecutorial fires. According to a leaked report chiding Marines for not investigating further, Army Maj. Eldon A. Bargewell was apparently appalled by ”statements made by the chain of command” that ”suggest that Iraqi civilian lives are not as important as U.S. lives, their deaths are just the cost of doing business.” Maj. Bargewell was also apparently exercised by the Marine consensus that ”civilian casualties were to be expected” due to such insurgent tactics as hiding among civilians…
If only someone would mention to the Waugh-ian-named Maj. Bargewell that when the ”business” is war, the chain of command darn well better consider ”U.S. lives” more important than ”Iraqi civilian lives” (many ”civilian” in name only), or guess what? Too many U.S. lives will be lost and the U.S. won’t win.
When the United States embarked on its most successful cases of nation-building in Germany and Japan, both countries lay in ruins, their cities and infrastructure devastated, their populations decimated.
These appalling conditions worked wonders toward opening both countries to all manner of Americana: democracy, deNazification, demilitarization and, in Japan’s case, not just a constitution practically written by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, but also baseball. In other words, Total War was followed by Total Pacification.
In Iraq, we have fought a Limited War for Limited Pacification, which has resulted in a perpetual, if limited, war zone. At about $200 million a day, this war may not sound very ”limited,” but consider where ”Sunni insurgents,” ”Shiite militias” and assorted thugs and jihadi groups go at night after a hard day’s maiming and killing and IED-ing. They go home to safe houses.
Total War. It’s ugly and barbaric, but it leads to Total Pacification, not to mention Total Victory, which is supposed to be the point. Limited War is ugly and barbaric, but it just leads on and on. And where is the moral purity in war unending?
Mycket bra fråga.
West fortsätter:
But such PC fantasy [vinna över irakierna och den muslimska världen genom att på olika sätt fjäska och offra sig för dem] fuels hearts-and-minds efforts that go beyond ”allegiance”-winning outposts in Iraq as the United States now weirdly cheers on world Islamization to curry Islamic favor. As said by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos at a recent Kosovo hearing ”Here is yet another example that the United States leads the way for the creation of a predominantly Muslim country in the very heart of Europe. This should be noted by both responsible leaders of Islamic governments, such as Indonesia, and also for jihadists of all color and hue. … The United States stands foursquare for the creation of an overwhelmingly Muslim country in the very heart of Europe.”
In 1999, [Fort Dix] sheltered more than 4,000 ethnic Albanian refugees during the NATO bombing campaign against Yugoslavia … After that war, refugees were allowed to return to the U.N.-run province of Kosovo in Serbia or to seek permanent residency in the United States.
Having been assured ad nauseam over the years by successive U.S. administrations that Kosovo’s Albanians are not really serious about their Islam, that even when they desecrate Christian churches and joyously rip crosses from their cupolas they do it for nationalist rather than jihadist reasons, the powers-that-be are doing their utmost to ensure that the public remains anesthetized. Asking when and how Albanian “secularists” became Islamic radicals is a no-no. Being so audacious as to wonder what this transformation bodes for a new, independent Muslim state in the heart of Europe is simply not on. Asking questions about major KLA figures’ documented links to jihad terrorism (including to Osama bin Laden personally) is polizeilich verboten. In the meantime, cadres, cash and ordnance linked to jihadist outrages all over Europe have been traced back to Kosovo, including the bombings in Madrid (March 2004) and London (July 2005), and a rocket attack on the U.S. embassy in Athens last year.
In New Jersey in May 2007, Kosovo blowback has finally reached America.
It is now essential to unmask the web of lies and distortions that has guided U.S. policy in the Balkans for years. The first step is to demand an explanation why and how Muslim Albanian terrorists from Kosovo were able to plan an operation here in the U.S. Why indeed: didn’t the U.S. military fight the Serbs for 78 days in 1999 so that they could have their ethnically clrean, Serbenfrei statelet?
