Martin Luther King Day

Idag är det tydligen Martin Luther King Day i USA. För mer än fyrtio år sedan sade han i sitt berömda ”I have a dream”-tal följande: ”I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”.

Edwin A Locke skriver i sin artikel ”What We Should Remember on Martin Luther King Day”:

What has happened in the years following King’s murder is the opposite of the ”I Have a Dream” quote above. Color blindness now has been replaced with color preference in the form of affirmative action. No amount of rationalizing can disguise the fact that affirmative action involves implicit or explicit racial quotas, i.e., racism.

Consider the realm of work as a case in point. Taking jobs away from one group in order to compensate a second group to correct injustices caused by a third group who mistreated a fourth group at an earlier point in history (e.g., 1860) is absurd on the face of it and does not promote justice; rather, it does the opposite. It promotes racism. You cannot cure racism with more racism. Singling out one group for special favors (through affirmative action) ignores the fact that people are individuals–not interchangeable ciphers in an amorphous collective.

Var skulle vi vara utan statlig forskning?

Financial Times:

The next time you beat your keyboard in frustration, think of a day when it may be able to sue you for assault. Within 50 years we might even find ourselves standing next to the next generation of vacuum cleaners in the voting booth.

Far from being extracts from the extreme end of science fiction, the idea that we may one day give sentient machines the kind of rights traditionally reserved for humans is raised in a British government-commissioned report which claims to be an extensive look into the future.

Visions of the status of robots around 2056 have emerged from one of 270 forward-looking papers sponsored by Sir David King, the UK government’s chief scientist. The paper covering robots’ rights was written by a UK partnership of Outsights, the management consultancy, and Ipsos Mori, the opinion research organisation.

David Zucker vs James Baker

Dagens citat:

Manners are the means through which a life-loving person of self-esteem expresses respect for the dignity of life. He doesn’t act in a polite way in order to perform a duty for another. Rather, his motivation is one of self-respect manifesting in respect for life, including those around him. It isn’t necessary to ”live for others” to have manners. It’s only necessary to appreciate living. One barometer of an individual (or family; or society) lacking in self-esteem is the decline of manners. – Dr Hurd

Dagens citat:

The mercantilists were under no illusions as to the nationalistic character of their policies and their tendency to promote war. It was national advantage and relative strength at which they were admittedly aiming. We may criticize them for the apparent indifference with which they accepted this inevitable consequence of an international monetary system. But intellectually their realism is much preferable to the confused thinking of contemporary advocates of an international fixed gold standard and laissez-faire in international lending, who believe that it is precisely these policies which will best promote peace (John Maynard Keynes, General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, s 348).

Worldwide, about two billion people — a third of the globe — get too little iodine, including hundreds of millions in India and China. Studies show that iodine deficiency is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation. Even moderate deficiency, especially in pregnant women and infants, lowers intelligence by 10 to 15 I.Q. points, shaving incalculable potential off a nation’s development.

The most visible and severe effects — disabling goiters, cretinism and dwarfism — affect a tiny minority, usually in mountain villages. But 16 percent of the world’s people have at least mild goiter, a swollen thyroid gland in the neck.

“For 5 cents per person per year, you can make the whole population smarter than before,” said Dr. Gerald N. Burrow, a former dean of Yale’s medical school and vice chairman of the iodine council.
