What Al Gore Really Wants. Robert Tracinski:

Al Gore made his triumphant return to Washington on Wednesday to give testimony before Democrat-controlled committees in the House and Senate. He returned, not as a failed presidential candidate, but as an environmentalist prophet. As Senator Barbara Boxer gushed, ”You have acted for us. You have acted more than anyone else.”

Gore’s transformation is remarkable. The stilted, insincere candidate from the 2000 election campaign is gone. The new Gore believes in global warming the way the pope believes in Catholicism—indeed, possibly more so—and he comes across as sincere and impassioned. While the sincerity may be doubtful (as we shall see below) the passion is definitely real. But what is it a passion for?

Debatt. Min insändare, ”Offra inte industrisamhället”, blev publicerad i HD igår lördag. Ni kan se den här (sidan 69 i PDF-dokumentet). Jag har också för avsikt att skriva två åtminstone ytterligare insändare i ämnet. Kommer att publicera dem här så fort jag blir klar med dem.

Dålig ”track record”. Om det fanns en gnutta sanning i environmentalisternas hysteriska reaktioner och protester mot befolkningsökningen, välståndshöjningen, koldioxidutsläpp, förbrukning av resurser, användandet av kemikalier, då tycker man ju att vi borde sett ett klart negativt samband mellan dessa saker och människors levnadsförhållanden. I själva verket är sambandet, föga förvånande för vänner av sunt förnuft, det rakt motsatta.

Reason påminner oss om framstegen de senaste hundra åren:

Indeed, the 20th century saw the United States’ population multiply by four, income by seven, carbon dioxide emissions by nine, use of materials by 27, and use of chemicals by more than 100.

Yet life expectancy increased from 47 years to 77 years. Onset of major disease such as cancer, heart, and respiratory disease has been postponed between eight and eleven years in the past century. Heart disease and cancer rates have been in rapid decline over the last two decades, and total cancer deaths have actually declined the last two years, despite increases in population. Among the very young, infant mortality has declined from 100 deaths per 1,000 births in 1913 to just seven per 1,000 today.

These improvements haven’t been restricted to the United States. It’s a global phenomenon.

Iran är på krigsstigen. Som de flesta redan vet har Iran kidnappat 15 brittiska soldater. IBD ledare reagerar som vanligt med en analys som är lika träffsäker som den är rak och rationell:

Sky News reports that ‘analysts’ are saying that ‘such cases are normally resolved peacefully.’ Resolved like the case of the eight Brits that Iran kidnapped from the same area in June 2004?

Those seamen were humiliatingly blindfolded and flaunted on Iranian TV. Only after they had admitted, certainly under duress, that they had illegally gone into Iranian waters were they released.

Should Blair’s government continue to pursue diplomacy beyond 24 hours, it will send Iran the signal it’s looking for and ensure that the demeaning scene of those eight seamen will be replayed many times over with British and U.S. sailors as the hostages.

Terrorists control the government of Iran. It’s unfortunate, but violence is the only language they understand. A bold show of force, if not raw force itself, is exactly what is needed in this situation.

Detta är bara den senaste krigshandlingen från Irans sida. Frågan är just hur länge den fria världen ska fortsätta att bete sig så här undfallande inför Iran.

På Jihad Watch kunde jag förresten igår läsa att Iran tidigare har militärt angripit amerikanska och irakiska soldater i Irak. Iran tycks vara på krigsstigen. Ändå väljer folk att protestera mot USA och Bushadministrationen. Detta trots att Bushadministrationen om och om igen säger att de har inga som helst planer på att bomba Iran. Vi lever i en upp- och nedvänd värld.
