Robert Tracinski. Via POS, igen, kom jag över denna förträffliga artikel av Robert Tracinski. Jag vet inte hur jag har kunnat missa den, men det hade jag i alla fall. Den är nämligen halvgammal. Men den innehåller en hel del väldigt klockrena kommentarer såväl som en hel del skrämmande citat. Seriöst, en del saker jag läste i denna fick mig nästan att hoppa ur stolen! Ett utdrag:

For those seeking to justify this kind of all-encompassing government control, global warming is the best candidate to come along since the collapse of Marxism. Like Marxism, environmentalism steals the ”scientific” aura of an established field–but in this case it has invaded the ”hard sciences,” which carry greater prestige than economics. And unlike previous environmentalist crusades, global warming is a threat that is global in scope and total and all-encompassing in its detailed application to human life. Other pollution scares–DDT, acid rain, the ozone layer–required only the banning of a single product or control over a single industry. None was big enough to require control of the entire economy over the period of a century, nor could any claim to be so urgent as to make dissent an ”irresponsible” act that is not to be tolerated.

Yaron Brook. ARI:s chef, Yaron Brook, blir intervjuad i Jerusalem Post, detta i samband med hans besök i Israel. Han håller där lite föreläsningar om kriget mot islamisk totalitarianism. Jag är för liten för att säga något om tidigare ledare för ARI, men det är mitt intryck att Brook förmodligen är den bästa som ARI har haft. Under 2000-talet har i alla fall ARI haft stora framgångar med att sprida Ayn Rands filosofi. Jag tycker att han är en mycket bra talare, bra på att svara på frågor, bra på att argumentera. Jag känner ofta att vi befinner oss på, så att säga, samma våglängd. Därför tycker jag att det är trevligt att han får sådan uppmärksamhet. Hans analys om de judiska bosättningarna tycker jag är väldigt intressant:

Given objectivism’s capitalistic ideal of private property, he opposes government confiscation of private Arab land for Jewish settlement as much as he opposes the notion of ”public land” – Arab or Jewish. Yet he regards the settlements as security – and moral – buffers; they are a test of the Palestinian’s true intentions.

”If the [Palestinians] really want peace why do they want settlements dismantled?” Brook said. ”Why wouldn’t they say we want a Palestinian state and we want these Jews to stay here and live as full citizens of the Palestinian state? They’re productive individuals, they create jobs, they bring a wealth of knowledge… If Palestinians are about ethnic cleansing, getting rid of Jews so that the Palestinian state is pure, then they’re not ready for peace, and Israel should not make peace with them.”

Via Stefan Karlsson kom jag också över en annan artikel i JP om Ayn Rands relation till Israel i största allmänhet.

”No Objectivists Need Apply”. FIRE uppmärksammar skandalen vid Ashland University. Historikern John David Lewis fick i princip sparken från universitet för att hans objektivism strider med universitets mål att sprida judeo-kristna värderingar. Under en massa andra omständigheter vore detta inte nödvändigtvis olämpligt. Problemet var bara det att i detta fall var ett sådant beslut direkt i strid med tidigare överenskommelser och kontrakt. Kontrakt eller inte är utvecklingen skrämmande eftersom detta kom i kontexten av att universitet hade bestämt sig för att bli en evangelisk institution. Detta innebär nämligen, som Nicholas Provenzo skrev, en steg tillbaka till den mörka medeltiden.

Att de aldrig lär sig. USA tänker pumpa in 750 miljoner doller i Pakistan. Varför? För att vinna över deras hjärtan, så klart. USA:s fiender lär få pengarna skriver New York Times:

But even before the plan has been fully carried out, documents and officials involved in the planning are warning of the dangers of distributing so much money in an area so hostile that oversight is impossible, even by Pakistan’s own government, which faces rising threats from Islamic militants.

Who will be given the aid has quickly become one of the most contentious questions between local officials and American planners concerned that millions might fall into the wrong hands. The local political agents and tribal chiefs in this hinterland on the Afghan border have for years accommodated the very groups the American and Pakistani governments seek to drive out.

USA funderar även på att ge pengar till folk som kanske inte är direkta fiender men som ändå är fientliga och otacksamma:

Så trots att dessa människor inte förtjänar ett öre av amerikanerna (de förtjänar knappt luften de andas), går USA ändå med på att ge dem pengar anonymt! Men hur ska USA då någonsin få någon sympati från dessa människor?

Dessa människor verkar förresten inte bara vara fientliga stammar, de verkar även vara mycket primitiva medeltida stammar: ”Suspicions about modern medicine are rife. A Pakistani doctor was blown up in his car in June after trying to counter the anti-vaccine propaganda of an imam in Bajaur, one of the tribal agencies, Pakistani officials said”. Vad säger man egentligen? ”Tack”? Jag tror att jag måste nypa mig själv för att vara säker på att jag inte drömmer just nu.
